Speech-Language Pathologists will diagnose and treat various types of communication, swallowing and cognitive disorders. In addition, Speech Therapy offers treatment to many speech/language disorders.

Our treatments include: Aphasia – A language disorder resulting from a deficit (e.g., stroke) in the left hemisphere of the brain. Dysarthria – Weakness of the oral musculature that causes various degrees of slurring of speech. Speech disorders resulting from progressive neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s. Deficits in thought processing and/or language. Dysphagia/oral feeding disorders – Difficulty in eating due to swallowing deficits. Articulation disorders include difficulties producing sounds in syllables or saying words incorrectly to the point that other people can’t understand what’s being said. Fluency disorders include problems such as stuttering, the condition in which the flow of speech is interrupted by abnormal stoppages, repetitions (stststuttering), or prolonging sounds and syllables (ssssstuttering). Resonance or voice disorders include problems with the pitch, volume, or quality of the voice that distract listeners from what’s being said. These types of disorders may also cause pain or discomfort for the child when speaking. Language disorders can be either receptive or expressive: Receptive disorders refer to difficulties understanding or processing language. EARLY INTERVENTION | Birth to Age 3

If you’re concerned about your child’s development, you’re not alone. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), 10-15% of preschool children in the United States experience developmental delays. While many developmental delays resolve without complications, research shows that early intervention is a critical factor for helping your child reach their full potential, and minimize complications related to concerns such as:

  • Why isn’t my baby talking?
  • Why isn’t my baby crawling?
  • Why is my toddler throwing a tantrum?
  • Why doesn’t my child respond to me?

Assessment of developmental delays involves a variety of care providers that will include your pediatrician as well as other specialists such as neurologists, behavioral specialists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language therapists, service coordinators, and educators. Getting started as early as possible is the first step in managing a developmental delay so as to prevent or get ahead of an emerging developmental disorder.
